There are so many planets that are outside our Solar System or what they call it exoplanet, have been found. In fact, the current number has penetrated 5,000 exoplanets.
NASA just added the 5000th planet to the NASA Exoplanet Archive data. Thousands of planets are many interesting and further research is still needed to unravel the various mysteries.
“The 5,000 planets discovered so far include small and rocky worlds like Earth, a gas giant planet several times larger than Jupiter, and ‘Jupiter’ is hot because it is so close to its star,” NASA said.
“There are also Super Earths, which are rocky worlds that are larger than ours, as well as mini Neptune, a smaller version of Neptune in our Solar System,” they added, as quoted by Reuters. detikINET from Space.com.
There are also strange or unusual planets. For example, a planet orbiting the remains of a dead star.
As for exoplanet was first discovered in the early 1990s. Although the number of planets detected has now reached 5,000, there are still many other planets out there.
“Of these 5,000 known planets, 4,900 of them are located a few thousand light years from us. In fact, our distance from the center of the Milky Way galaxy is 30,000 light years. There are many planets in our galaxy yet to be discovered, maybe 100 to 200 billion. It’s mind blowing,” said Jessie Christiansen, a NASA scientist.
Currently, NASA has operated a new generation of James Webb telescope which is much more sophisticated than the previous version. This telescope is believed to be able to discover more and more new planets and unravel the mysteries exoplanet deeper.
