JAKARTA – Rumors of the sophistication of the iPhone 13 smartphone are increasingly circulating ahead of the official launch on September 14. One of the most surprising is the ability of the iPhone 13 to have satellite connectivity.

MacRumour reported, iPhone analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the iPhone 13 has embedded the ability to make calls and internet via satellite connectivity. This happens because the iPhone 13 has modified the Qualcomm X60 chip. As a result, the new smart phone will be able to be directly connected to a low-orbit satellite communication system (Low Earth Orbit).

So when no existing network is found, 4G or 5G, the iPhone 13 is still able to make calls and connect to the internet.

Currently, the low-orbit satellite communication system or LEO is indeed a prestigious project. This was marked by the acquisition of low-orbit satellite company Swarm Technologies by Starlink, Elon Musk’s internet and communications company. Swar Technologies has sent many satellites into low-Earth orbit as communication bridges and high-power internet. This is what Starlink is trying to use to become a big internet company in the future.

But Starlink isn’t the only company using LEO satellites for connectivity. Hughesnet and OneWeb also recently decided to team up to compete with Starlink.

For the iPhone 13, Ming-Chi Kuo expects to take advantage of Globalstar’s satellite network. However, he has not confirmed whether this service will come to smartphones as a free feature or only work for Apple’s applications such as iMessage and FaceTime.

On the other hand, he pointed out that satellite communication connectivity is nothing new for Apple products. The company purportedly plans to include this feature in a variety of devices that could include headsets, electric cars, and other Internet of Things (IoT) device accessories.
