Taylor Swift Donates $100,000 to GoFundMe for Family of Kansas City DJ Killed in Shooting
In a heartwarming display of generosity, pop superstar Taylor Swift has donated $100,000 to a GoFundMe campaign set up for the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a Kansas City radio DJ who tragically lost her life in a mass shooting that occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory parade. Swift, who has developed a close relationship with the team’s star tight end Travis Kelce, instantly met and exceeded the original goal of $75,000 set up to support the family of the beloved 44-year-old mother of two.
Swift’s spokesperson confirmed that the singer made two separate donations of $50,000 each to the cause just before commencing her Eras Tour in Melbourne, Australia. At the time of writing, the GoFundMe page had already raised over $177,000 from 1,400 donations, with contributions ranging from $5 to $100.
The donations page featured a heartfelt statement that read, “She was an amazing mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to so many. We ask that you continue to keep her family in your prayers as we grieve the loss of her life. This fund will help provide vital financial support to her family as they process this unthinkable tragedy.” Swift herself left a message of condolence, writing, “Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your devastating loss. With love, Taylor Swift.”
Lopez-Galvan had been a private mobile DJ for over 15 years and co-hosted “Taste of Tejano” for local station KKFI since March 2022. The station released a statement expressing their sadness and condolences, stating, “It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally. Our hearts and prayers are with her family.”
The shooting occurred during the Chiefs’ victory parade, which was attended by nearly one million fans. Gunfire erupted near the end of the parade, resulting in the tragic death of Lopez-Galvan and injuries to 22 others, with half of the victims being under the age of 16. According to USA Today, the shooting was sparked by a personal dispute between several individuals. Police detained three juveniles in connection with the incident, with one suspect being released later on. During the event, one person questioned by the police was tackled by bystanders before being detained, highlighting the massive police presence of over 800 officers.
Travis Kelce, who shares a close bond with Swift, expressed his heartbreak over the tragedy on Twitter, stating, “I am heartbroken over the tragedy that took place today. My heart is with all who came out to celebrate with us and have been affected. KC, you mean the world to me.”
Despite the devastating incident, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas remains determined to continue hosting parades and mass celebrations in the city. He emphasized that the shooting should not deter future events, including the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, Democratic Sen. Steve Roberts acknowledged that Kansas City faces a gun violence challenge and highlighted the loose gun laws in the state. Mayor Lucas assured the public that every effort would be made to ensure people’s safety during major events.
On the other hand, Republican Sen. Bill Eigel, who is also running for governor, took to Twitter to address those advocating for stricter gun control laws in response to the tragedy. He stated firmly, “To the liberal gun grabbers already trying to use this KC tragedy to push your radical gun control agenda, hear me now: NOT IN MISSOURI. One good guy with a gun could have stopped the evil criminals who opened fire on the crowd immediately. Guns don’t kill people. Thugs and criminals kill people.”
