Surprise: the HomePod operating system is now based on tvOS

The version 13.4 HomePod software seemed harmless … and yet it hides a big change under the hood, invisible to the eyes (and ears) of the user. According to 9to5Mac, the operating system of the connected speaker rests now… on tvOS! Knowing that tvOS, watchOS and the old HomePod system all work on an iOS kernel, at first glance this change in the engine does not change the use of HomePod.

The first benefit, it is first for Apple: the Apple TV and the HomePod are devices constantly connected to a power outlet. Their operating system – now tvOS – does not need to be optimized for autonomy. Having only one OS to manage rather than two is a saving of time and resources. Another common point between these products, they are both HomeKit concentrators. Again, sharing the same code between the streaming box and the speaker makes sense.

The site points to another interesting reason: the HomePod and the Apple TV 4th generation (1080p) are equipped with an A8 chip. If iOS 14 can bazaar support for devices with such a chip, tvOS 14 would keep the speakers and TV boxes in the race. This novelty comes at a time when a new rumor announces a mini (and more affordable) version of the HomePod – who could also be satisfied with an A8 chip?
