Surprise from Brexit deal: UK stops Erasmus exchange program

What is the Erasmus program?

Founded in 1987, the Erasmus program aims to connect Europeans. Erasmus grants allow students to take a number of courses in another European country for a number of months – with a monthly grant. The program also leads to the exchange of teachers, PhD students and knowledge. In addition to EU countries, Macedonia, Serbia, Norway, Iceland, Turkey and Switzerland are also participating.

In 2018, 30,218 Dutch students went on an Erasmus exchange, of which 2,309 went to the UK. After Spain, the UK is the most popular destination for Dutch students. Erasmus was also popular among British students. In 2018 17,048 British students went abroad. The Netherlands was in fifth place of the most popular destinations.
