surgeons practice with hi-tech visors- Corriere.it

The covid-19 pandemic has shown everyone limits the human condition. Our goals, technologies and resources, conquered over the centuries, have proved insufficient to defend us from the virus. Humanity has had to reflect on its condition: do we need more advanced weapons, taller skyscrapers or smarter smartphones? Shouldn’t we invest more in the unique and inalienable good than life, and the safeguarding of it? It is now clear to everyone that the technology and scientific innovation in the medical field are the horses that will allow us to win the race, today and in the near and distant future.

The project

A mission that found no helpless spectator Filippo Piatti, CEO and co-founder of Artiness. Italian company winner of the 11th edition of the Open Innovation Contest organized by NTT Data, a multinational company that deals with system integration, professional services and strategic consulting. Artiness stands out for the application in the medical field of augmented and virtual reality technologies capable of providing valid and innovative support to surgeons and doctors.

Let’s try to imagine one of the most complex open-heart operations, a single attempt to save the patient. Thanks to 3D modeling, a virtual ‘copy’ of the patient who will have to enter the operating room is created. The surgeon can thus try out the intervention on a virtual avatar before making the incision, wearing visors. He can then zoom in and verify every single step and criticality of the operation on a virtual patient. These new technologies can become the medicine of the future once they are integrated into daily clinical practice, explains Filippo Piatti. Our purpose of obtain the necessary certifications for internationalization, and gradually involving more and more hospitals.

Artiness is the spokesperson for a small medical revolution which is finding many supporters and financiers in different parts of the world. The purpose of the contest was precisely to create opportunities for startups for get in touch with international investors and realities. Giorgio Scarpelli, senior vice president, head of innovation and chief technology & innovation officer at NTT Data Italia explains. Open Innovation Contest the main event that as a group we organize every year to animate the ecosystem of startups from our point of view. NTT Data is an innovation-oriented company and needs this important connection with the world of startups, which bring us enthusiasm to realize successful ideas, he adds.

The experimentation

But what is really missing from such a technology to be regularly applied in the medical field? The main obstacle, only bureaucratic, is the lack of historicity of its use. This is not yet proven in the field that equipping doctors with Artiness technology can bring improvements for the patient. But it is precisely on this last point that the experiments of the Piatti team are focusing. The technology is already being tested in some European hospitals to evaluate clinical effects, we plan to obtain certification as a medical device by May 2021, reassures Piatti.
