Supreme Court: Trump may set more requirements for a residence permit | NOW

The US Supreme Court approved Monday a proposal by President Donald Trump to further restrict immigration. The policy makes it possible not to provide a residence permit, a so-called green card, if it is likely that someone may need government support in the future.

From now on, the residence permit of immigrants who may be able to make use of care facilities, food stamps and housing that are subsidized by the government can be rejected more easily.

The immigration service will also look at factors such as a person’s age, level of education and command of the English language when issuing residence permits.

According to the Trump team, the new measures will ensure that immigrants in the United States are more independent, but lawyers who specialize in immigration law fear that the measures will lead in particular to minorities and people on low incomes from developing countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia will receive a green card less often.

The proposal was adopted with five votes in favor and four against. The judgments of lower judges who previously blocked Trumps plans are now rejected.

Immigration is an important policy issue for Trump during the upcoming US presidential election.
