Supermarkets: There is no shortage of food NOW

Since the Corona virus press conference that Prime Minister Mark Rutte gave on Thursday, supermarkets have seen that much more is being bought by consumers. But they emphasize on Friday that there is enough food and that hoarding is not necessary.

“Everyone has seen that a lot more has been bought and that shelves are empty,” said a spokesperson for the Central Food Trade Agency (CBL), which spokesperson on behalf of the supermarkets. “But the special thing about the situation is that there is no shortage of food. You don’t have to hoard.”

The spokesperson says that suppliers and supermarkets have been scaled up to full capacity. “Everyone is at full strength. There are extra trucks on the road to supply the shops.” Enough is also being delivered from Italy, he emphasizes.

After Rutte’s press conference, images were shown that some supermarket shelves were empty. Sustainable products and cleaning products are particularly popular.
