Swiss football is suspended until April 30th. The representatives of the 20 clubs will discuss what will happen in the Super League and Challenge League on Monday at an extraordinary general assembly in Bern.
However, the Swiss Football League (SFL) has only limited decision-making powers.
One thing has to be clear: whatever the representatives of the Super and Challenge League clubs agree on, the development of the corona pandemic and the measures taken by the authorities can make any decision obsolete at any time. The UEFA conference on Tuesday with its member associations is also a decisive factor. If the European association continues to hold the European Championship finals from June 12 to July 12, this would probably result in the Swiss championship being abandoned. The remaining 13 rounds could hardly be played between May 1st and May 31st.

But nobody expects UEFA to hold its European Championship on the scheduled date. Therefore, the Swiss clubs want to answer the question on Monday whether and how the season can be ended if the situation around the spread of the corona virus in Europe relaxes in the second half of April – at least to the extent that ghost games are possible again would be. For FCZ President Ancillo Canepa, one thing is clear: “Under no circumstances can we stop the championship. That would be the stupidest of all possibilities, »as he said to the NZZ.
«You can forget that»
Last Thursday, however, the ice hockey players chose exactly this path: demolition, no master, no relegation, no promotion. The Swiss Football League wants to prevent such a scenario. “It is still a clear goal to end the season in summer,” she wrote in a message on Friday. At first glance, that’s possible. 13 dates (plus cup) could be found from the beginning / middle of May to the end of June.

But at second glance, things are more complicated. Depending on the canton’s decisions, sports clubs are not only allowed to not hold competitions until the end of April, but are also prohibited from holding team training sessions. So the teams could start the advanced training at the earliest on May 1st. Seriously calculated, the resumption of the championship would only be possible towards the end of May. For Sions President Christian Constantin this is not a viable option: “You can forget that,” he told the “Blick”.
What if you gave yourself enough time to get through the corona pandemic and end the season in late summer, as Angelo Renzetti, the president of FC Lugano, thought? This would result in contractual chaos. Many player contracts expire at the end of June. Players on loan belong to their original club again from July 1st.

Mode? Hardly an issue
Nevertheless, the clubs and the SFL leadership will review different scenarios on Monday. The impossible is also possible these days. Only one thing is currently completely out of focus: the discussion about a new mode. The extraordinary general meeting had only been scheduled because of precisely this agenda item. But to talk seriously and conclusively about the next season and the season after next would be almost grotesque and surreal these days.
