A summer sports practice took a dramatic turn when the teenager Robert Bush collapsed playing soccer last week in Selden (Long Island, NY), was critically hospitalized and eventually taken off life support.

But the 17 year old will save the lives of three women by donating their organs, his family reported, for which he is remembered as a hero.

Bush was placed on life support after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest on Monday, July 3 at Newfield High School. Doctors declared him clinically dead four days later, on Friday.

“We just found out a few moments ago that you are helping a 60-year-old woman in Massachusetts, a 60-year-old woman in New Jersey, and a 50-year-old woman here in New York. The surgery has just been completed now,” said his older brother, Steve Bush.

He added that giving the gift of life is something his younger brother would have wanted. Robert was one of 10 siblings. His eponymous father said his son was treasured from the moment he was adopted in 2008.

“It has been a joy from that moment on. The saddest moment we have had with him is now. There really haven’t been any sad moments. He just he was a positive kid,” said Robert Bush Sr.

More than 200 people from Bush’s hometown gathered outside Stony Brook University Hospital on Friday night. It was then that a walk of honor was held on the fourth floor of the hospital moments before the organs were to be removed from him, he reported. News 12.

A GoFundMe page created to raise money for Bush’s medical expenses has raised more than $26,000 so far. The Bush family said they plan to use the money to establish scholarships for Newfield High School students in his memory. The young man will be buried next to his mother at Pinelawn Memorial Park.
