Sudan punishes circumcision of girls

According to Unicef, 87 percent of 15- to 49-year-old girls and women are circumcised in Sudan. Now the country has taken an important step in the fight against this practice.

As the United Nations Children’s Fund writes on its page, circumcision of girls and young women in the country in northeastern Africa is still “deeply rooted in tradition and culture”. In genital mutilation, the clitoris is often removed in addition to the labia. The consequences of this procedure can include infections and pain during sexual intercourse. Sudan has now criminalized this practice. Three years in prison.

According to Unicef, circumcision is still taking place in 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East. This is often done with a razor blade. Circumcision has already been banned in some areas of Sudan, but these bans have often been ignored, such as bbc.com reported.
