The new airline wants to deploy assets from loss-making Alitalia and start with 55-60 aircraft and 4,500 employees, the newspaper reports The messenger.
According to the newspaper, the conversations are at a turning point. In recent days, there has been contact with competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager. An informal green light is expected to be issued within a week.
At the end of April, ITA CEO Fabio Lazzerini said: “We have to start quickly because the market is picking up. Alitalia’s competitors are very aggressive, especially the low-cost carriers. ” He is referring to the one hundred routes that Ryanair will fly within Italy this summer.
“We want to start with a small number of aircraft on July 1 and gradually expand that,” he said earlier.
Incidentally, ITA does not only talk to the EU competition authority: it is negotiating a partnership with a combination of Air France-KLM, Delta and Virgin on the one hand and with Lufthansa on the other. Who ITA will partner with will be announced at the end of June, Lazzerini said.
