As usual, the ÖVP country chief exercised well-calculated humility. Hermann Schützenhöfer said he had hoped for gains, but “I would not have dared to dream that it would be in this dimension”.
The dimension is actually remarkable: The ÖVP rose by 4.5 percentage points to 47.2 percent in the Styrian municipal council elections on Sunday, and this also in elections that were unique due to the corona: the municipal council elections were changed due to the pandemic from the original date postponed for three months on March 22.
But SPÖ state chairman Anton Lang, who accompanied his first election as party leader, was also able to breathe a sigh of relief. After the drastic crashes in state and national parliamentary elections, the SPÖ was finally able to enjoy a (delicate) plus before an election result, by 0.3 percentage points to 31.9 percent.
