We did not believe that Poland was doomed to the right. We are in politics to finally change something – said Left candidate for the presidency Robert Biedroń. According to the exit poll, it received 2.9 percent support in the first round of presidential elections.

According to an exit poll conducted by Ipsos incumbent president Andrzej Duda gained 41.8 percent support. Rafał Trzaskowski, a candidate of the Civic Coalition, came second with the support of 30.4 percent of respondents. The podium closes the independent candidate Szymon Hołownia, who scored 13.3 percent. Robert Biedroń, with 2.9% support, came in fifth, ahead of Krzysztof Bosak, a Confederate candidate.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose”

Robert Biedroń after announcing the results of the exit poll said that “our dreams and hopes meant that we did not believe that Poland is doomed to the right.” – Because we know that we have our values ​​and our program and we will always be on this side – on the side of our values ​​and our program – he said.

– The left has never been easy, but we always win when we are united. I would like to thank all those who believed that a different policy is possible, that the values ​​that our past generation fought for, because the left has a beautiful history, a beautiful identity, but also the values ​​that the current generation is fighting for and will be future generations fought. It is worth fighting for and we will always do it – said Biedroń.

The Left candidate said that “we are here today because we believe that another policy is possible, that there is change in politics.” – Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but we are in politics so that finally something changes, that people live better, that people are happier, that equality means equality, and dignity means dignity. This is our task, we cannot abandon this task today. This task with even greater strength must be carried out by us tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, every week and every month in the future, because it is the task of the Left: be always with people – he added.

The Left candidate also said that “these were the strangest choices in modern European history.”

– I would like to address the one who will receive the best result in the opposition (…). From this place I would like to declare that I am ready to talk to anyone who wants to build a law-abiding, democratic Poland, which will be part of the European Union – said Biedroń.

He declared that he would like to build a Poland that would satisfy “the Left electorate, whose people dream of such values ​​as equality, social justice, sustainable development, tolerance and openness.” – Who know that these values ​​are important and must be defended. I would like to say for this leader who will have the best result today, here, from this place: Poland is the most important. I am ready to talk – declared the Left candidate for presidential election on Sunday.

“These were not easy choices. They were choices that were full of emotions”

Biedron thanked his staff members with Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bąk at the forefront. – I think that in five years there will come a moment when also a woman will have a chance to stand in elections and say: this is the moment for women to change the face of Polish politics – he said.

He thanked all his opponents. – These were not easy choices. It was an election that was full of emotions. But we fought fair play. We fought for Poland of our dreams – said Biedroń.

“You didn’t convince yourself that there is no alternative”

He addressed words to his constituents. – You have not been persuaded that there is no alternative, that there is no hope for another policy. Yes, there is an alternative, there is hope for a different policy. You have proved it with your voice in today’s elections, ”Biedroń pointed out.

According to the poll, none of the candidates won more than 50 percent support. This means that – if the survey results are confirmed – a second round will be needed to elect the president, which will take place on July 12. According to exit poll, Andrzej Duda and Rafał Trzaskowski will face it.

Turnout in the first round

According to the poll, turnout in Sunday’s first round of presidential elections was 62.9 percent. This is more than in the previous presidential election five years ago. Then 48.96 percent of eligible people voted in the first round.

On Sunday, during the day, the National Electoral Commission informed the turnout twice election. 24.08 percent of eligible voters by noon. By 17:00 – 47.89 percent.
