“Stupidly built”: New roundabout in Wattwil scratches trucks from below

A new roundabout at the bypass in Wattwil causes trouble for truck drivers. The rear part of the vehicles is scratched due to the different height of the pads in the roundabout. Up until now, the construction management knew nothing of the problem.

(gbo) “It is a new roundabout that was built so stupidly,” says Fredy Baldegger, Managing Director of Baldegger Transporte, in the TVO. The lower rear part of his truck was scratched while driving the roundabout. “It crushed the whole electrical box,” he says. the reason is not Baldegger’s driving style, rather there are differences in the surfaces of the new roundabout.

“The gyroscope had to be built higher in the area, but we have a lower pavement level at the entrance,” says senior site manager Oliver Bettschen. The roundabout replaces a crossing at the Wattwil bypass. The project cost the canton CHF 50 million. And now small differences in height in the rubbers have annoying consequences for truck drivers. “We cannot take every truck into account,” says Bettschen. The problem was not recognized during construction.

Incomprehensible to Fredy Baldegger. “It’s crazy if you build a new gyroscope and it’s not suitable for trucks.” There would be much deeper trucks like his. His insurance will probably have to pay for the costs himself, the canton does not want to pay anything. The only bright spot is that the gyroscope is only provisional. After the summer vacation, the problem dents should be repaired and the gyroscope completed.
