Study: Unvaccinated pregnant women are more at risk of complications due to COVID

Ankara (ANTARA) – A study recently published in Nature Medicine magazine revealed that unvaccinated pregnant women are more likely to be hospitalized if infected with COVID-19.

“Sars-CoV-2 infection rates and COVID-19 vaccination in pregnant women in Scotland”, using data from an 11-month observation of 87,000 pregnant women in Scotland from December 2020-October 2021.

The study also noted that pregnant women did not appear to be more susceptible to the virus than nonpregnant women, finding that pregnant women were “at high risk for severe COVID-19.”

The researchers also found that “pregnant women exposed to SARS-CoV-2 were more likely to be admitted to critical care, use invasive ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and also die.”

From December 2020-October 2021, 2,364 babies were born to mothers who contracted COVID-19 during pregnancy.

“From that number, as many as 2,353 babies were born alive, with 241 of them born prematurely,” he continued.

While the percentage of premature births in the general population is 8 percent, 17 percent of babies are born within 28 days of their mother being infected with COVID-19.
