A group of 82 participants at risk of type 2 diabetes were divided into two dietary groups: carnivorous and plant-based. The carnivorous group incorporated traditional meat products into their diets, including beef, pork, and poultry, while the plant-based group consumed ultra-processed plant-based meat alternatives. Brands such as Impossible Beef, Omni Foods, The Vegetarian Butcher, and Beyond Meat were among the options provided to the plant-based group.

Researchers analyzed various factors related to cardiovascular health, including cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and dietary cholesterol intake. Surprisingly, the results demonstrated that no clear effects were observed between the animal-based meat diet and the plant-based meat group in terms of cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Additionally, it was noted that sodium intake among the plant-based meat consumers increased significantly, while blood pressure only showed “modest improvements” in the carnivorous group.

The Health Halo Surrounding Plant-based Meats

The study’s co-authors and experts in the field have expressed concern over the unjustifiable “health halo” surrounding plant-based meat products. It is important to note that the production of these alternatives often involves a substantial amount of processing, leading to high levels of salt, saturated fat, and additives. According to Dr. Haldar, the current plant-based meat alternatives on the market do not provide the same health advantages as a traditional plant-based diet, rich in whole foods such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables. The study’s findings highlight the opportunities for improvement in these products to align with consumer perceptions of superior health benefits.

Current State of the Plant-based Food Industry

Recent market trends indicate a slowdown in the demand for plant-based meat alternatives. Brands such as Meatless Farm and Beyond Meat have experienced sales slumps, and the range of meat-free goods offered in supermarkets has reportedly shrunk.
