7,000 steps a day in middle age can keep a person’s arteries healthy and reduce the risk of premature death by up to 70%, according to a new study.
The findings of US researchers show that this lower number is sufficient to protect against serious heart complications – instead of the usual recommendation of 10,000 steps per day.

The study included a group of adults between the ages of 38 and 50 who took at least 7,000 steps a day and found that these people were at a much lower risk of premature death over the next decade.
The authors of the study also found a difference between men and women who increase their daily number of steps. Deaths among men have dropped by 58%, but this percentage is up to 72% among women.
“This study found that the higher daily volume of steps was associated with a lower risk of premature death from all causes among black and white women and middle-aged men,” said lead author Dr. Amanda Paluh of the University. in Massachusetts, Amherst for JAMA Network Open magazine.

“Study participants who took at least 7,000 steps a day had a 50% to 70% lower risk of mortality than those who took less than 7,000 steps a day,” the researchers wrote. .
At a fast pace, the average person takes about 70 minutes to complete this exercise, compared to about two hours at 10,000 steps. However, the study adds recent evidence to suggest that this number is too high.
“Taking more than 10,000 steps a day is not associated with a greater reduction in the risk of mortality,” the team said.
The World Health Organization advises adults to do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or 75 minutes of intense physical activity per week.
“Physical activity provides significant health benefits for many conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and several cancers, as well as improving quality of life,” the researchers said.

The results support previous research showing that increasing daily steps among the least active can add years to their lives. An analysis in Norway also found that increasing the number of steps reduced mortality by up to 57%. Two earlier studies in the United States found that just 4,000 steps a day reduced mortality by about 30%.
