The incident follows a series of shark sightings off Rockaway Beach, which led New York City to temporarily close the beach to swimming several times last month.

The last person to be bitten by a shark off Rockaway Beach was 15-year-old Alan Stevenson Jr., who caught a shark while fishing in 1953. The fish bit his leg after he caught it. grabbed by the tail.

Attacks off Rockaway are rare, but New Yorkers who live along the Long Island coast are more at risk, with three swimmers bitten by sharks this year off Fire Island and the Hamptons on the day alone of July 4.

Police were spotted deploying drones off the coast of Rockaway immediately after the incident.
