Strong second half: Kiel gives Potsdam no chance | News

Two previews of THW lenses

The Potsdams are the colts team of the Bundesliga club Füchse Berlin, they are coached and coached by their manager Bob Hanning and initially offered the preferred energetic stamina, just 24 hours after the Füchse defeat in Flensburg they also had some players from this game in their line . Right-wing Yannick Fraatz, signed from league rivals Bergischer HC last week, celebrated his debut for Kiel, who still needed to do without the injured Sander Sagosen, Hendrik Pekeler, Sven Ehrig, Rune Dahmke and Magnus Landin . The left-footed player scored the first goal for his new club in the 27th minute for 16:13 for Zebra. Henri Pabst celebrated another première: In the final tournament, the youngster scored his first two competitive goals in the professional team THW Kiel. Coach Filip Jicha had to do without a regular left winger on the outskirts of Berlin, replacing ailing Dahmke and Landin with Miha Zarabec in an unusual winger position. The vivacious Slovenian had a good game and scored four times in total.

The Kielers don’t get off to an optimal start

Zebre initially struggled against the strong third-placed side in the second division, failed to get into the game and were down 3-0 after five minutes and 5-2 after eight minutes. When goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva parried VfL captain Karl Roosner’s third shot from seven meters, the THW team was in shock. The following 5:0 run with goals from Patrick Wiencek, Steffen Weinhold, Niclas Ekberg, Miha Zarabec and Nikola Bilyk put the favorites 7:5 ahead, until in the 18th minute the Kiel team equalized with great actions from Eric Johansson , Karl Wallinius, Weinhold, Wiencek and Bilyk 12:7 forward. But a series of mistakes and time penalties allowed the outsider to make up ground, which led to Josip Simic coming from 12:13 after 25 minutes. Filip Jicha’s first time-out was logical and brought the favorite back on track, although the home side managed to narrow the lead to 16:19 at the break thanks to a directly converted free throw from Beneke.

The zebras come out strong from the stand

A much stronger THW Kiel then returned to the field from the dressing room: the Kiel team attacked more vigorously in defense and also had a real class man in Tomas Mrkva in goal, who turned into a wall for the ‘Potsdam striker, holding a total of 18 difficult balls. Until the 45th minute, the hosts only got through two balls against the Kiel goalkeeper, and since THW also used their baggage of tricks in attack and literally played the second division team against the block, the game was over after captain Domagoj Duvnjak hit the counterattack at the latest from the 47th minute at 28:18.

Hardness and Sorcery

From then on, Filip Jicha sent his sons to the plate, who thanked him with a lot of effort and goals. Henri Pabst scored twice, Ben Connar Battermann and Luca Schwormstede each scored once. However, the outsider defended himself at times with unnecessary harshness: Niclas Ekberg was fouled brutally by Emil Hansson, the Dane rightly saw the red card. Eric Johansson also has it, the young Swede who got off after a challenge in mid-air and spent the rest of the game on the bench with an ice pack on his sore left shoulder. The rest of the match was then a spectacle of the German record cup winner, who worked a lot of magic in front of 100 THW fans, stormed into the next round, celebrated a deserved victory and later fulfilled many requests for autographs from young handball enthusiasts.

Game Comments:

THW-Trainer Filip Jicha: I’m happy that we won and I would like to congratulate Bob Hanning and his team: I found the way his guys walk and show their availability incredibly nice. We lost many duels in the first half, but then quality was on our side. Tomas denied many clear chances and therefore the result was clearer than the game suggested. I liked the fact that despite our personal issues we took the challenge and just played this game.

VfL trainer Bob Hanning: I gladly accept Filip’s praise. As long as we had enough strength, we showed a good game. Unfortunately, we didn’t reward ourselves for that in most halftime situations. We lost the goalkeeper duel by a long shot, but the quality at THW Kiel in the goalkeeper position and in attack is different. Too bad we can’t reward ourselves with a better result. I would have been a little happier with minus ten or minus eleven. But, and I also told my boys in the dressing room: there’s no reason to be happy with the result, but no reason to be sad now either. We will take a lot from today’s match in Kiel, which has been a lesson for my players in many ways.

THW rookie Yannick Fraatz: I have to admit that I was a little nervous at first. Being able to play for THW Kiel for the first time was something special. After the first good deed I was a little more relaxed. We are not happy with today’s first half because we conceded too many goals. We did it quite well in the second half and then we were able to shape the game clearly.
