Streaming Services to Increase Subscription Prices in 2023: Netflix, Hulu, Max, Disney+, Prime Video, Paramount+

Jakarta

Netflix had received public attention because it announced an increase in the cost of its subscription services. However, it turns out that throughout 2023 it will not only be Netflix that will increase its subscription rates.

Reporting from CNBC Make It, Friday (20/10/2023), the cost of the basic ad-free Netflix package has increased from US$ 9.99 to US$ 11.99. Meanwhile, the premium package has also increased from US$ 19.99 to US$ 22.99.

The company took this step as the streaming giant seeks to increase its profitability. Meanwhile, the cheaper, ad-supported tariff remains at a monthly rate of US$ 6.99, while the standard ad-free plan will remain at US$ 15.49 per month.

With the official Netflix price increase taking effect, in 2023 a number of big names in the streaming industry will increase their prices.

The following is a list of streaming services that will increase their subscription prices throughout 2023.

Hulu

Disney raised Hulu’s monthly fee by 20% over the summer, from US$ 14.99 to US$ 17.99. Disney CEO Bob Iger said at the time that the goal of raising the price of ad-free plans was to steer customers toward ad-supported subscriptions.

Max

In January, the streamer formerly known as HBO Max raised the monthly rate for its ad-free plan from US$14.99 to US$15.99. When they combined its library with content from Discovery+ in May and officially became Max, they added a new, more expensive plan.

The ‘Max Ultimate Ad Free’ plan costs US$ 19.99 per month and offers customers more movies and shows in 4K UHD. This plan also allows for streaming on four devices at once and downloading 100 movies or episodes for offline viewing.

Disney+

The home of Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar raised the price of the ad-free tier from US$ 10.99 to US$ 13.99 per month in October after previously increasing the price by US$ 3 in December 2022. Disney+ itself introduced a package ad-supported last year.

Prime Video

While Prime Video is a free bonus for customers who subscribe to Amazon Prime for US$ 14.99 per month, consumers can also subscribe to the streamer ‘Fleabag’ and ‘The Boys’ for a standalone fee of US$ 8.99 per month.

Amazon announced in September that it would soon introduce a limited number of ads in its TV shows and movies starting next year. Customers who want to continue watching ‘The Rings of Power’ ad-free will need to spend an additional US$ 2.99 per month.

Paramount+ With Showtime

Streamer ‘Yellowjackets’ announced a price increase from US$ 9.99 to US$ 11.99 last month. Meanwhile, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish also announced that another price increase will occur in 2024 or 2025.

Youtube Premium

Lastly is the YouTube Premium streamer. YouTube’s ad-free service will also not escape price increases in 2023. YouTube increased the price of a number of its packages from US$ 11.99 per month to US$ 13.99 per month in July.

This service allows for an ad-free YouTube viewing experience, access to YouTube Music, as well as the ability to download videos for offline viewing.
