Strasbourg’s Obscurae Bookstore of the Strange Closes its Doors and Offers Book Sales

Info locale

Just one year after its opening, the bookstore of the strange Obscurae, located at 10 rue Munch, closed shop. At issue: a complicated economic reality. To help the manager empty his stocks, he invites us, via his Instagram account, to come and buy the books still available in the store.

“A bookstore that dies is not a page that turns, it is a book that closes, forever. » This quote from French author Henri Loevenbruck has never been more relevant. While Strasbourg is the world book capital this year, independent bookstores are experiencing difficulties. Latest: on January 27, Obscurae announced the end of its adventure, just one year after its opening.

The “strange bookstore” had come to fill Strasbourg’s fine literary offerings with its fantastic, horrific and esoteric offering. She had been able to count on loyal customers, but also a good reputation.

Unfortunately, the complicated economic reality got the better of his project, with a significant imbalance between expenses and turnover below forecasts.

It is still possible to buy books

On his Instagram accountthe manager of Obscurae evokes “a difficult decision to make” : “I also have to think about myself and my future. The bookstore was not a whim, it was a dream that I realized by putting all my soul into it. I am proud to have created Obscurae and to have filled a gap in Strasbourg, even if economic reality caught up with me.”

From now on, it still needs to clean up its cash flow as much as possible, in order to close in good conditions. For fans of the fantastical, esoteric or simply if you want to support a Strasbourg bookseller, it is still possible to buy books from stock, before seeing a “On sale” sign in front of 10 rue Munch.
