Speaking to reporters after meeting his South Korean counterpart in Seoul, Special Envoy Sung Kim said the US was committed to exploring sustainable and substantive diplomacy with North Korea.
“Our goal remains the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula,” Kim said.
“That is why Pyongyang’s recent ballistic missile test, one of several in the past six weeks, is worrying and counterproductive to making progress towards lasting peace on the Korean peninsula.” Reuters, Sunday (24/10/2021).
Pyongyang has so far rejected US offers, accusing Washington and Seoul of talking about diplomacy while raising tensions with their own military activities.
On Thursday, North Korea said the United States was overreacting to a test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile it called self-defense. Pyongyang later questioned the sincerity of Washington’s offer of talks, warning of the consequences.

Even so, the US special envoy stressed, the launch violates several United Nations Security Council resolutions and poses a threat to North Korea’s neighbors and the international community.
“We call on the DPRK to stop its provocations and other destabilizing activities and instead engage in dialogue,” he said, using the initials of North Korea’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
