Stonehenge is “second hand” Originally it was in Wales- Corriere.it

FROM THE CORRESPONDING LONDON Perhaps the hand of the wizard Merlin really is behind the mystery of Stonehenge. Medieval legend has it that the megalithic circle in Salisbury Plain was brought there from Ireland at the behest of the master of spells: According to the History of the Kings of Britain by Godfrey of Monmouth, a 12th century monk, Merlin wanted the Dance of the Giant, the stone circle that was on the legendary Mount Killaraus, to be brought to England and erected as a memorial for the troops of the Britons treacherously massacred by the Saxons. A monument that King Art’s uncle, Aurelius Ambrosius, wanted to last forever. But when the 15,000 men employed in the enterprise found it difficult to remove the stones from the ground, Merlin intervened with many tools.

Now it turns out that the legend has a grain of truth: because the Stonehenge circle is actually second hand and was brought there from Wales, where it originally arose. British archaeologists believe they have identified Waun Mawn, Pembrokeshire, the original site where the monument was erected, more than 4000 thousand years ago. But after 3000 BC, those Neolithic tribes who had built the first stone circle migrated to England, taking their crown jewels with them.

A remarkable undertaking, which involved the displacement of plates weighing tons for about 250 kilometers: it is assumed that the transport took place at the rate of five kilometers a day (excluding magical arts).

The significance of the megalithic structure of Stonehenge remains a mystery and has given rise to imaginative when not science fiction conjectures, also fueled by its perfect alignment with the summer solstice. But now archaeologists believe it may be Britain’s first monument to unification.
