Sting revisits his hit with Shirazee

Sting continues to be a hit the world over. As proof, his new project “Duets”, on which he compiles all his duets, started at fifth place in the Top Albums with more than 6,000 sales to the counter. The record also enters the top 10 in Germany, Poland, Japan, Belgium and the Netherlands, proof of the immense popular success that the singer of “Every Breath You Take” continues to meet. The idea came to me when I recorded a duet with Melody Gardot, “Little Something”. This is the message I send in this troubled time: it’s beautiful artists who sing together, in harmony (…) Sometimes, I had the opportunity to sing with my idols, like Charles Aznavour. I am very grateful for it. This album is very eclectic, having been recorded over more than twenty years confided the artist to the newspaper The mountain, while the project contains its most famous duets with Cheb Mami, Annie Lennox, Shaggy or even Mylne Farmer.

Moreover, it is another duo that Sting has unveiled to celebrate the release of the record “Duets”. While he recently admitted regretting having reformed his group The Police in 2007, the singer shares a new version of one of his biggest solo hits: “Englishman in New York”. From the album “Nothing Like The Sun”, the track which mixes pop and jazz did not meet a huge success when it was released as a single in 1988, but has since become a staple of Sting’s career. So much so that the song, telling the story of this Englishman, a alien lgal , discovering American culture and New York City was sampled by Black Eyed Peas or successfully resumed by Chris Cab in 2015. From now on, Sting is appropriating the hit to unveil a rereading shared with the Beninese singer Shirazee, a rising star of Afropop.

The latter also gives a solar and afropop touch to the song, now called “Englishman / African In New York”. I am always delighted when artists take a piece that I wrote to make it better, to make it different. This is something exciting for me says Sting, honor. For the black and white clip of “Englishman / African In New York”, Sting and Shirazee walk the streets of the American city, strolling at their own pace in the different neighborhoods of New York.
