Still red numbers for Air France-KLM, but loss is a lot smaller

Aviation group Air France-KLM made another loss in the summer, but much smaller than a year earlier. The loss in the third quarter this year is below the line 192 million euros. In the same period last year, that was still about 1.6 billion euros.

Without including taxes and interest payments, even black figures remained: about 796 million euros.

In the press release, CEO of the group Benjamin Smith speaks of the figures about a good summer, thanks to the opening of the borders in various countries. 17 million passengers flew with the group in the summer months. That is almost double the year before.

This also increased turnover to 4.5 billion euros. That is also a lot more than in the previous summer: when the group turned around 2.5 billion euros. In the summer of 2019, before corona, that was still about 6.5 billion euros.

Support

The summer months were the last months in which the company received wage support from the government. KLM is by far the largest recipient of this wage support. In 2020 it was more than a billion euros. The package will stop in October.

KLM previously announced that it did not expect any additional redundancies as a result, but emphasized that support was still desirable due to the large loss of turnover due to the travel restrictions.

In addition to the wage support, which other companies have also made use of, KLM also received a separate support package from the government: 3.4 billion euros in loans and guarantees.
