In the first half of this year, both the amount of insurance fraud and the number of people caught hit a record high. ‘Survival insurance scams’ among those in the restaurant and food service industries, as well as daily and unemployed people, showed a sharp increase. Analysts say that the vulnerable class, who was hit by the’direct hit’ of the spread of Corona 19, fell into the temptation of crime. On the other hand, false hospitalization fraud has greatly decreased due to the corona 19 effect.

The Financial Supervisory Service announced on the 22nd that the amount of insurance fraud detection in the first half of this year was 4526 billion won, an increase of 9.5% compared to the same period last year, to a record high. The amount of insurance fraud exceeded 400 billion won in the first half of 2018, and increased 3.3% to 4134 billion won in the first half of last year, but this year showed a close to double-digit increase. The number of people caught was 4,7417, an increase of 10% from a year ago. The number of people caught was also the highest ever. The average amount of detection per person was 9.5 million won. 71% of the total number of cases found were fraudulent crimes of less than 5 million won in insurance.

More than 90% of insurance scams occurred in non-life insurance. The proportion of auto insurance exceeded 60%. Intentional accidents such as car collisions increased by 28.3%, and damage related to car accidents increased by 52.5%. Regarding automobile accidents, the hospital’s managerial claims (11.4 billion won) and the maintenance factory’s managerial claims (3.2 billion won) also surged 431.6% and 92.4%.

By type, false hospitalizations decreased by 30.3%. False obstacles and false diagnosis increased by 51.0% and 30.5%, respectively. An official from the Financial Supervisory Service explained, “While false hospitalizations have decreased due to the corona 19 pandemic, single-shot insurance fraud has increased, such as false obstacles and false diagnosis that are relatively easy to obtain insurance money. By occupation, the number of insurance scams among catering workers was 1,144, a 137% increase from the first half of last year. The unemployed and daily workers also increased by 22.9% to 921.

Myung-gyun Chae, head of the Insurance Fraud Response Team of the FSS, said, “Insurance fraud includes not only deliberate accidents, but also manipulating the details of the accident even a small amount and claiming insurance money. It is very important to avoid it.”
