Stiftung Warentest sees many shortcomings in popular WLAN routers

Stiftung Warentest has tested eight WLAN routers for the latest print edition, which are available and widely available in Germany. There is also a cable router – it runs out of competition. The Berlin manufacturer AVM is doing very well.

The judgment of the Stiftung Warentest in the WLAN router comparison 2020 is mixed. The Telekom Speedport Smart 3, for example, only scores satisfactorily with a grade of 2.8. The Telekom router reveals its shortcomings in terms of security. The situation is similar with the Telekom Speedport W 925V. Stiftung Warentest criticized both inadequate protection against unauthorized access. The Speedports are also significantly behind other manufacturers in terms of functionality.

There are security issues

The goods testers also criticize the lack of automatic updates at Asus in order to fix weaknesses as quickly and reliably as possible. With the Telekom routers, the auto updates are only available on Telekom lines. With TP-Link, users can assign a device password that has only one character – this is also not conducive to security. The data transmission, security functions, handling, telephony, power consumption and versatility were tested.

Handling and data transfer are weighted the most with 25 percent each, followed by 20 percent for the security functions. Only the FritzBox 7590 received a “very good” (grade 1.5) this year. Deductions were only made on electricity consumption. Otherwise, the WLAN router got a “very good” in all points. Second place goes to AVM: The FritzBox 7530 scored only marginally worse than the 7590 with a grade of 1.6. The 7530 is also a price-performance winner.

The following were also tested:

  • TP-Link Archer VR2800v (grade 2.1)
  • Asus DSL-AC68VG (grade 2.9)
  • TP-Link Archer VR9000v V2 (grade 2.9)
  • AVM FritzBox 6591 Cable (Grade 2.0)
