Dramatic rescue operation by the fire brigade on Rügen. A 19-year-old was hanging helplessly from a branch on a cliff at a height of 60 meters. Users also reacted on Facebook with a broad lack of understanding.

The height rescue from Sassnitz was notified of the life-threatening situation on Monday afternoon. A number of emergency services from the police and fire brigade were immediately sent out on a large-scale operation. Among other things, a helicopter and the water police were on duty to support the rescue.

According to current police investigations, a 19-year-old man from Saxony, who was on vacation on Rügen, wanted to climb down the well-known steep coast near the Königsstuhl in Jasmund. An 18-year-old friend accompanied him.

Rügen: 19-year-old clings to branch in the cliff

At a height of around 60 meters, the 19-year-old finally didn’t know what to do and could neither forward nor backward. He clung helplessly to a branch growing out of the cliff.

Even the 18-year-old did not manage to save his friend from the hopeless situation. Fortunately, other vacationers heard their calls for help and alerted the rescue workers.

With the help of so-called rescue trousers, the professional altitude climbers of the fire brigade on Rügen were finally able to bring the young man to safety. Fortunately, he was unharmed except for a few minor abrasions.

The 19-year-old was handed over to the police. It is currently unclear whether he will be held liable for the cost of the costly rescue operation. On the occasion, however, the police expressly pointed out again that the descent on the chalk coast is only permitted in designated places.

Holidaymakers regularly put themselves in danger on the famous steep coast on Rügen. It is already the ninth mission for height rescue on Rügen, this year alone. Also under the fire brigade’s post on Facebook, many users, especially residents of Rügen, expressed their displeasure with the actions.
