Statement by Lina Moreno after the Court’s decision against Álvaro Uribe – Political Parties – Politics

In her first public statement since the Supreme Court ordered the house arrest of her husband, former President Álvaro Uribe, former first lady Lina Moreno called for overcoming “the narrative of hate”, amid the polarization generated by the legal situation of the head of the Democratic Center.

In a statement released last night, Mrs. Moreno de Uribe assured that, beyond the controversies, it is necessary to maintain respect for judicial decisions: “Despite the divergence of opinions on the sentence (the arrest warrant against Uribe Vélez) of the Court, a common bond unites them: the call to abide by the rulings of justice ”. Moreno assured that the former president’s family decided to remain silent and “go through pain to find in him prudence and modesty that perhaps, only perhaps, will serve to renew a language worn out by rancor and political fanaticism.”

And he added: “The magistrates are not just magistrates. They are also human beings who think, act, speak, dream and, how can it be otherwise, are influenced by their environment. And it is this double nature that comes into play when it comes to the law, since this is first of all language, that is, interpretation ”. He added, citing the novelist Sándor Marai, that “without the atmosphere that makes interpretation possible, the law is just a celestial body that shines but has no soul.”

He regretted that in recent years an image of Uribe has been built “as an instigator and determiner of a criminal apparatus, guilty of the worst political and social atrocities experienced in Colombia in the last forty years,” and said that “this image is what it has reached the courtroom ”.

Finally, Moreno assured that there are serious “legal contradictions”, not only in the case of her husband, which she attributed to the fact that supposedly “the judges have allowed the environment and political interests to pass judgment.”

This is the statement from Lina Moreno de Uribe

“It would be necessary to understand that things have no remedy and yet be determined to change them” Francis Scott Fitzgerald.

Last Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia, in its Investigation Room,
issued a prison measure against former President and Senator Álvaro Uribe Vélez
domiciliary. The Democratic Center party, Senators and Representatives of the different parties that act in the political life of the country, business unions, the media and citizens of the most diverse aspects have expressed their opinion on this decision.

Meanwhile we, his closest family, have kept silent.
We needed to go through the pain to find in it the prudence and the modesty that perhaps, only perhaps, serve to renew a language worn out by rancor and political fanaticism.

Despite the divergence of opinions on the Court’s ruling, a common bond unites them: the call to comply with the rulings of justice. Magistrates are not just magistrates. They are also human beings who think, act, speak, dream and, how can it be otherwise, are influenced by their environment. And it is this double nature that comes into play when it comes to the law, since this is first of all language, that is, interpretation. Or, to use an expression by Sandor Marai (in his case on literature), without the atmosphere that makes interpretation possible, the law is only “a celestial body that shines but has no soul.”

If for some years our family felt the gratitude of the popular fervor for the
commitment and dedication of Álvaro Uribe with the country, in recent times we have
assisted in the construction of his image as instigator and determiner of a criminal apparatus, guilty of the worst political and social atrocities experienced in Colombia in the last forty years, and this image is the one that has reached the judicial courts. Indeed, we see in the double nature of those who are in charge of the application of justice (magistrates / human beings), an explanation of the legal contradictions (and not only in the case of the former president) brought to light by columnists and lawyers of different branches. Said clearly: the judges have allowed the environment and political interests to pass judgment.

The absence of a spiritual sense that guides the destinies of the country and of all of us -as individuals who have to fulfill both destinies- has been solving for decades in a narrative of hatred that already reaches the new generations. Against this narrative we want to recover the last words of Thomas Mann in his novel The Magic Mountain: “From this universal feast of death, from the terrible feverish fire that lights the evening and rainy sky around us, will love ever arise?” . The world had just been through the First World War. The circumstances and conditions of our country are different, but the question is absolutely necessary.

“To rise to the occasion, you have to dare, and that means sawing the branch where we are sitting; so we can take flight “.
