State student council demands free local transport for university day in Saxony

On Thursday, the universities in Saxony will open again for the annual university day. On this occasion, the Saxony State Student Council (LSR) suggests simplifying visits to colleges and universities on this day in the future.

“We therefore propose: Starting next year, all participating students should receive a free one on this day University ticket that applies to all public transport throughout Saxony, comparable to the Sachsenticket from DB Regio,” said LSR Chairwoman Lilly Härtig.

In this way, the journey to the most important university locations Dresden, Leipzig and Chemnitz as well as to other universities would be possible for all students regardless of their personal wallet, according to the LSR.

Ministry refers to existing education ticket

The Saxon Ministry of Science welcomes the proposal, but restricts it: “To what extent this can be implemented and financially represented would first have to be checked by the transport company,” said spokesman Falk Lange at the request of MDR SACHSEN. In the meantime, a discounted one has already been made with the financial participation of the Free State education ticket been established for 15 euros in a monthly subscription. “The public transport offer within the tariff area of a transport association can therefore be used for 50 cents a day,” said the spokesman for the ministry.
