State of emergency declared in New York, where hurricane Ida is raging

Hurricane Ida, downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, caused serious flooding in New York where a state of emergency was declared. At least seven people have died.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency shortly before 11:30 p.m. Thursday evening, announcing that the city was facing a “historic weather event” following the spectacular floods caused by the passage ofhurricane Ida. The current toll shows seven deaths.

The Governor of the State of New York, Kathy Hochul, did the same statewide. “I am declaring a state of emergency to help New Yorkers affected by tonight’s storm,” she said.

Notify NYC, New York City’s emergency communications program urged residents not to drive until 5 a.m. to facilitate emergency response.

Closure of schools and public transport should also be announced during the day. In two hours, no less than 180 millimeters of rain fell in New York, which corresponds, for the State, two months of precipitation in normal times.

Liters of water have, for example, spilled into the Manhattan subway stations, which are totally flooded.

In the Queens, strongly affected by the phenomenon, water entered Arthur Ashe Stadium, the main stadium of the Flushing Meadows complex where the US Open is being held. Rains also swept through the Louis Armstrong court.

At first, staff members managed to dry the court with machines provided for this purpose, but the surface of the field eventually became waterlogged. While the enclosure risks turning into a swimming pool, the tennis tournament has been suspended until further notice.

For a few hours, Brooklyn is also completely underwater. Cars float through the streets that have turned into a river.

The neighboring state of New Jersey, where the Newark airport was affected by the flooding, has also been placed in a state of emergency. And Hurricane Ida has not finished wreaking havoc. According to the American meteorological services, it should, this Thursday, continue its journey north and head towards New England.
