City of Zurich ZH: Disturbing actions successfully avoided during the “March for Life”.

In the run-up to the “March for Life” there were various appeals for nuisance and damage to property with spray guns. This is why the Zurich city police were on the scene Saturday afternoon with a corresponding contingent and prevented major disturbances.

A total of eight people were arrested and more than 150 people were screened and deported.

After 2pm, the participants gathered in the Oerlikon market square for the “March for Life”. At the same time, the demonstrators, some of them masked, gathered in the Sternen Oerlikon area and then held an unauthorized counter-demonstration. After a short march through Wallisellenstrasse and Dörflistrasse, the demonstrators wanted to march to the market square via Tramstrasse. This was prevented by the Zurich city police. Irritant was to be used to stop the demonstrators. Until the start of the “March for Life”, small groups of people tried to interrupt the event on the market square. In this context, several people were checked and deported. When counter-protesters tried to break through a police barrier, the emergency services had to use rubber pellets and irritants. As a result, the approved demonstration could start with several hundred participants on a shortened route and with a delay just before 4pm.

Eight people have been arrested so far, including a young man. The arrests were made, inter alia, due to the ban on carrying weapons and the obstruction of an official act.

The inspection at Tramstrasse is still in progress. There are currently no reports of damage or injury to the property.
