Starting December 1, shopping at Bukalapak Cs is subject to 10 percent VAT

Directorate General Tax (DJP) Ministry of Finance announced that some marketplaces will collect Value Added Tax (VAT) of 10 percent to consumers starting December 1, 2020. They are Bukalapak, Tokopedia, to Zalora.

Director of Counseling, Services and Public Relations, DJP Hestu Yoga Saksama, said this provision is in accordance with the appointment of the Director General of Taxes, Suryo Utomo. This is because these companies have met the criteria as VAT collectors on digital goods and services sold.

“With this appointment, since December 1, 2020, these business actors will begin to collect VAT on digital products and services they sell to consumers in Indonesia,” said Hestu in an official statement, Tuesday (17/11).

Hestu details companies that are now VAT collectors, namely Bukalapak, Tokopedia, Zalora, Blibli.com, Lazada, Valve Corporation (Steam), beIN Sports Asia Pte Limited, Cleverbridge AG Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise USA, and Softlayer Dutch Holdings. BV (IBM).

“The amount of VAT that customers must pay is 10 percent of the pre-tax price, and must be included on the receipt or invoice issued by the seller as proof of VAT collection,” he explained.

Even so, Hestu said that the marketplace which is a domestic taxpayer who is appointed as a collector, VAT collection is only carried out on the sale of digital goods and services by foreign sellers who sell through the marketplace.

Along with the designation of 10 new companies as VAT collectors, a total of 46 domestic companies have received VAT collector status on domestic digital transactions.

Previously, Netflix, Zoom, and Shopee had already collected this tax because it was determined by the DGT.

“DGT continues to identify and actively establishes communication with a number of other companies selling digital products abroad to Indonesia to socialize and find out their readiness,” he said.
