Starnberg: First coronavirus case in Germany – Bavaria

A man from the district of Starnberg has been infected with the novel corona virus. A spokesman for the Bavarian Ministry of Health in Munich told the SZ late Monday evening.

According to the German Press Agency, the man is being treated at the Schwabing Clinic in Munich. The German automotive supplier Webasto confirmed on Tuesday morning that the sick person was one of his employees.

On Monday, Webasto announced that a Chinese employee had also been diagnosed with the coronavirus. Company boss Holger Engelmann confirmed the SZthat the Chinese woman was in Munich from January 19th to 22nd, the diagnosis was made after his return to China on January 26th. One now works “closely with the relevant offices”, also to clarify whether the man entered infected or whether this only happened when he returned to China.

Bavarian Health Minister Melanie Huml said at a press conference on Tuesday morning that “the case was being taken seriously” but was well prepared. The sick man is still doing well and the investigation into people with whom he has been in contact is in full swing. Consider whether it makes sense to take a fever measurement at the airport.

Andreas Zapf, the President of the Bavarian State Office for Health, described the process. It is a 33-year-old man who had a meeting with the Chinese colleague last week. After returning to China, the Webasto employee tested positive for the corona virus and the company was informed. The man had felt grippy on the weekend after contact, but had not linked it to the virus, and went to work on Monday morning. After a thorough examination, it was clear on Monday evening that the 33-year-old was infected. The authorities then decided to monitor him in hospital.

According to the, the patient is “Task Force Infectious Diseases” of the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) clinically in good condition. “He is under medical supervision and is isolated.” The close contact persons are informed in detail and informed about possible symptoms, hygiene measures and transmission channels.

The “Task Force Infectiology” of the LGL and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) currently consider the risk for the Bavarian population to become infected with the new type of corona virus to be low.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn was not surprised by the appearance of the pathogen in Germany. “It was to be expected that the virus would also reach Germany,” said Spahn. The Federal Republic of Germany is well prepared and the Robert Koch Institute believes that the danger to people in Germany remains low. “After the suspicion has been confirmed, the people with whom the patient has had close contact are now being examined,” said Spahn. “This prevents the virus from spreading.”

In the meantime, more than 4,500 infections with the 2019-nCoV virus originating from China have been confirmed worldwide. The number of deaths in China rose to more than 100. Outside Asia, on the other hand, the number of infected is still comparatively low – apart from the case that has just become known in Germany, there are only 14 confirmed cases: five in the United States, one in Canada, three in France and five in Australia.

Spahn: “In the worst case, everyone knows who is responsible and what to do”

Responsible persons in Germany have repeatedly emphasized in the past few days that the danger in this country can be assessed as low. The German press agency Spahn said on Monday: “Basically we are vigilant, we take things very seriously, but we are also well prepared.” Prepared pandemic and handling plans clarified what to do in the event of an accident at the airports and at the clinics.

The Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases and other national authorities are in constant communication with the authorities of the federal states, nationally and internationally. “Everyone has their specific task,” said Spahn. “If the worst comes to the worst, everyone knows who is responsible and what to do.” They also learned from the Sars epidemic 2002/03.

There is currently no protective vaccination or special therapy to treat the disease. However, the symptoms can be alleviated with medication. According to the current assessment of experts, the novel lung disease appears to be mild in most cases, possibly even without symptoms. According to current knowledge, most of the deaths registered in China are due to older patients with severe previous illnesses.
