Sri Lanka Bans Burqa, Closes More Than a Thousand Islamic Schools

COLOMBO – Sri Lanka will ban the wearing of the burqa and close more than a thousand Islamic schools or madrasas.

The government’s move will affect the country’s Muslim minority population.

Sri Lankan Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera said he signed a document on Friday seeking cabinet approval.

The contents of the document are to prohibit the full face covering worn by some Muslim women for “national security” reasons.

“In our early days, Muslim women and girls never wore a burqa. That is a sign of religious extremism that has emerged recently. We will definitely ban it, “he said.
