SRF arena on coronavirus: This is how politicians react

«I am a gothic who is at risk!» – so Beda Stadler mixed up the Corona «arena»

Switzerland hardly speaks about any other topic at the moment. No wonder, then, that the SRF “Arena” also dedicated itself to the corona virus. One of the guests dominated with his pointed statements, but fell on deaf ears with his colleagues.

The corona virus dominates the news situation. According to the current status, 15 corona cases have been confirmed in Switzerland, more than 100 people are in quarantine. At a media conference on Friday, Health Minister Alain Berset announced that all major events with more than 1,000 people would be banned until March 15.

The SRF-Arena also deals intensively with the topic. As early as 9:00 p.m., presenter Sandro Brotz stood in the “Arena” studio and discussed the current situation with numerous guests, including Johny Fischer from the comedy duo Divertimento and Heidi Hanselmann, President of the Health Directors’ Conference (more on this in the ticker).

All current developments in the live ticker:

The regular SRF “arena” then followed at 10:25 pm. Already in the special program as well as in the “Arena” that followed, the focus was on a man whose face currently dominates the screens of Swiss households: Daniel Koch, Head of Communicable Diseases Department at the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG). Koch also provided informative and competent information on his latest TV appearance and, despite attempts by moderator Brotz, did not let himself be disturbed. «The situation in Switzerland is under control. We currently know from every patient where he or she got infected. »

FDP National Councilor Regine Sauter is also not to be disturbed. “I trust the BAG and behave as recommended – I wash my hands thoroughly and frequently.” On the other hand, the Thurgau SVP National Councilor Verena Herzog is only moderately satisfied with the work of the BAG. “At the beginning, the information was very sparse. The virus was downplayed and treated like flu. »

When asked by Brotz, with what grade Herzog would rate the communication of the BAG, she answers: “With a scarce four.” Koch, placed a little apart on the expert desk, does not make a face at this remark. So his answer to Herzog’s criticism is short: «Either it is said that we play down the whole thing or we panic. We just try to provide as serious information as possible and make no forecasts. »

In contrast to Herzog, Beda Stadler, emeritus professor of immunology, would be well with the BAG miss a much better grade, «The virus is surely overrated. But the federal government is responding just right. There are studies that show that the measures taken have the necessary effect. » Stadler does not see the situation as calmly as Sauter.

For him, above all, the scaremongering in the media is incomprehensible. «We have to make it clear to everyone that children are not at risk. The statistics are clear. I am a gothic who is at risk! » It is also Stadler who runs Verena Herzog over the mouth angrily and criticizes her as a teacher when these individual cases are addressed, where younger people also died because of the coronavirus. «These are people who have been in intensive contact with infected people and have been infected several times in a very short time. This is a special case. » In this country you are prepared and would not experience the same thing as in China. “Everyone who panics here and thinks that everyone will soon start to die is simply wrong,” Stadler rumbles.

In general, the emeritus professor dominates the discussion. His intention is unmistakable. Again and again he talks about vaccination. «People must finally learn to deal with such viruses. As soon as there is a vaccine against it, nobody wants to get vaccinated. A vaccination compulsory is finally needed. » The elderly had been watched for years to die. “We don’t care if 300 to 400 older people die of the flu each year. Because society can do without it. » That must finally change and politics must take care of it.

Nobody really wants to respond to Stadler’s demands. Neither the politicians present nor moderator Brotz take the thread. They prefer to talk about the behavior of the SVP. The party is currently using the corona virus to draw attention to the limitation initiative. For example, the former SVP National Councilor Christoph Mörgeli tweeted:

His party is meanwhile sending out media releases with titles such as “The SVP demands rigorous checks and rapid medical tests at the borders” and “Switzerland should initially no longer accept asylum seekers from Italy”.

The SVP woman does not want to comment in the Mörgelis Tweet studio. Perhaps a little intimidated by Beda Stadler’s timpani before, Herzog’s statements about the border closure remain vague: «One has to ask whether it is the right way to ‘charrel’ so many people across the border. That can simply lead to negative consequences that we are now experiencing. »

The FDP leader Regine Sauter has a fairly firm opinion about the communication of the SVP. «I find it absolutely reprehensible to capitalize on such exceptional situations. Closing the border is not only absolutely inconceivable, it also does nothing. »

More Corona Virus Articles:

In addition to the guests in the arena, Sandro Brotz also receives numerous voices from the population. A team of doctors and experts answered questions about the corona virus during the program. And there are also people in the studio who are allowed to comment on the current situation. At the end of the program, a public guest even managed to elicit a hardly noticeable nod from Daniel Koch from the BAG. When asked by Brotz what she thought of the media coverage, the woman said: “There is already a lot of hype about it. I think it’s just important that we take responsibility and use common sense. And don’t panic. »
