This weekend, the mayors of Knokke and Blankenberge have denied access day tourists. The crowds on Saturday but also, and above all, the general brawl which broke out in Blankenberge pushed the mayors to take strict measures by municipal decree.
“The town is complete. Day tourists who had nothing to do in Knokke were made to turn around. This Sunday, we had a town that looked like a town again ”, abstract the bourgmestre Léopold Lippens. At the beginning of the afternoon, the municipalities of Bredene and Le Coq also decided to close their access roads to day tourists.
This restriction will not necessarily end with the end of the weekend, however. “This Monday, from 10 am, the controls will resume”, ad the knokkois bourgmestre. “And for the next few days, we will advise as we go. If there are a lot of cars, we will continue. If not, maybe we’ll change our minds. You can’t mobilize the police for 8 hours for nothing. “
Léopold Lippens again asks tourists not to go to the coast. “Everything is saturated, there is no point in adding 20 or 30,000 visitors! Spread the word: don’t come to the coast! “
► Other mayors could follow in Leopold Lippens’ footsteps if the influx of tourists became too large.
► The decision would not pose no problem on the legal level: here is Why.
