Yesterday released the first season of the new Netflix series with Kaya Scodelario (who had already appeared on the streaming platform alongside Zac Efron in Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile). In ten episodes of fifty minutes, we follow the evolution of young skater Kate Baker, whose ultimate dream is to compete in the Nationals. After falling and having a head injury, her career as a favorite falters, and her already bad relationship with her mother Carol (January Jones) and her sister Serena gets even worse … In short, his life is a disaster! But she has a new opportunity when Justin’s coach (Evan Roderick), a talented skater from his club, offers him to do a duet with the young man.
So, what is this dive into the tumultuous mysteries of figure skating worth? We regret to disappoint you, but this new series suffers from some obvious weaknesses … If the main cast is pretty good, characters do not avoid certain stereotypes. Our heroine is a tormented young woman whose personality is reminiscent of that of the Effy Stonem of Skins, a loner capable of self-harm. Her mother is a former sports champion to whom she forces her daughters to devote themselves. As for Justin, he is a rich and attractive sportsman who is interested (unsurprisingly) in the only girl who does not want him, and maintains conflicting relationships with his father. Profiles that we have already seen many times on the screen, only made credible by the charisma of the actors.
In terms of staging, the showrunners Samantha Stratton and Lara Olsen lack finesse: the plans are far from having the grace and finesse of the movements made by the skaters of the series … As for the credits, it is far too long! Of course, these are just our first impressions, and Spinning out could well correct the shooting in the next episodes by deepening the personality of the main characters. We are curious to discover how the relationship between Kate and Justin will evolve, and if the heroine is going to be reconciled with her sister and her mother.
