Right now, one of the brightest star clusters in the Milky Way appears in the sky, namely the globular star cluster Messier 3. Together with other globular star clusters, it was formed in the youth of galaxies when there were large amounts of hydrogen in the universe.
As hydrogen was used up in the Milky Way, the formation of the globular clusters also ceased.
Since then, most have evolved into flat spiral galaxies, and today we know of about 250 globular clusters in the Winter
gatan.
