Specialists called viruses that provoke cancer | News of Kirov and the Kirov region

Specialists of the German Cancer Research Center named several viruses that are most often associated with the development of cancer. About this with reference to the work of scientists reports “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”.

1300 researchers analyzed 2600 tumor genomes caused by 28 different types of cancer. They found traces of 23 different types of pathogens in 356 cancer patients. The most common are viruses that are already known for their driving effect in the development and growth of cancer:

• Epstein-Barr virus was found in 5.5 percent of the genomes studied. It is the cause of many types of cancer, especially lymphoma, cancer of the stomach and nasopharynx.
• Hepatitis B virus was detected in 62 of 330 cases of liver cancer.
• Human papilloma virus with HPV detected in 19 of 20 cases of cervical cancer and in 18 of 57 neck and throat tumors.

In some cases, a retrovirus for kidney cancer and cytomegalovirus for stomach cancer have also been detected. Scientists did not find previously unknown viruses.

Oncologist Mark Zapatka believes that knowing which viruses are associated with cancer can prevent the disease through vaccination.
