A Spanish woman who was traveling with her husband in India was gang-raped by seven assailants.

According to foreign media such as the Times of India on the 3rd (local time), a Spanish female tourist was gang-raped by local men in the Dumka area of eastern Jharkhand on the night of the 1st. Her husband, who was with her, was also assaulted.

The couple was traveling around South Asia, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India, on a motorcycle. On the day of the incident, the person was sleeping in a tent set up in a bush about 2km away from the main road to stay overnight in the area.

However, it is said that about seven assailants burst into the tent and committed a crime by holding a knife to the couple’s neck and threatening to kill them. After committing the crime, they took some of the couple’s belongings and ran away. The victim reported the incident to the police and was taken to a nearby hospital along with her husband for treatment.

The couple posted a video on Instagram and revealed the damage. In the video, her husband’s face appeared bruised, including her swollen lips.

Local police have currently arrested three suspects and are pursuing the remaining suspects.

India has serious sexual crimes against women, leading to the stigma of being a ‘rape country’. In December 2012, in New Delhi, the capital of India, a 23-year-old female college student was repeatedly sexually assaulted and mutilated by five adult men and a teenage boy on a bus, leading to her death and being left on the street.

According to India’s National Crime Records Bureau, an average of 90 sexual assault cases were reported across India every day in 2022. The local government estimates that the number of victims will be higher if incidents that were not reported to the police are added. In order to eradicate sexual crimes, the law in India was revised to allow for the death penalty for rapists.
