Reuters reported that the US space exploration technology company SpaceX is building a network of hundreds of spy satellites under a confidential contract with US intelligence agencies.
The report quoted sources as saying that SpaceX signed a US$1.8 billion contract with the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in 2021. If the project is successful, it will greatly improve the US government and military’s ability to quickly discover potential targets almost anywhere in the world.
Reuters believes that this shows the extent of SpaceX’s involvement in U.S. intelligence and military projects, and also indicates the Pentagon’s deeper investment in the development of large-scale low-Earth orbit satellite systems to support ground forces.
SpaceX, founded by wealthy businessman Musk and the world’s largest satellite operator, did not respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
The National Reconnaissance Office, the intelligence agency responsible for managing spy satellites, issued a statement acknowledging the development of sophisticated satellite systems and partnerships with other government agencies, companies, research institutions and countries, but declined to comment on the extent of SpaceX’s involvement.
