SEOUL – A South Korean (South Korean) KA-1 light aircraft crashed on Monday (12/26/2022) while rushing to intercept a North Korean (North Korean) drone that had intruded into South Korean airspace.

This was announced by the South Korean army, as reported by the Yonhap news agency. Both pilots reportedly survived unharmed.

According to an official quoted by Yonhap, the military has detected several “unidentified objects”, suspected of being unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), in Gyeonggi-do province which borders North Korea.

Speaking at the briefing, a Joint Chiefs of Staff official said: “The South Korean military responded to an unknown trail of what it thought was a North Korean drone in the Gyeonggi area this morning.”

He denounced the incident as “a clear provocation”.

“The drone crossed the military demarcation line between the two countries, flying over Gimpo, Ganghwa and Paju islands,” the South Korean military said.

The official described the drone as small, with a wingspan of less than two meters. The South Korean military added: “One of the five drones flew as far as Seoul.”
