Sophie Wilmès visiting a school in Lessines: she hands out diplomas to 6th grade students

The Prime Minister went to René Magritte Athenaeum to explain her role in government, but also to give them their certificate of basic studies (CEB).

Today is a celebration day at the René Magritte Athénée in Lessines. “Madame Sophie” in person, the Prime Minister, Sophie Wilmès is there to present the diplomas to 21 students in 6th grade. But before that, it is the course: questions answers to the patron saint of the government.

“The special powers regime will end on June 27. What are you going to do next?”, asks a little girl.
“I will certainly not go on vacation anyway, unfortunately”, she jokes. And the Prime Minister to explain : “The regime of special powers is what I call an anomaly of democracy”.

Special powers were granted to the Wilmès government 3 months ago. During this period, it was no longer necessary to go through the room to decide. Like parental leave corona, lowering VAT on soft drinks, suspending bankruptcies or budgets for hospitals. In total, around forty orders and decisions have been taken. As of next Tuesday, the special powers stop.

“I confirm that there is not yet a new government because there is a minority government. So that is why we would like to be able to enlarge or transform it. I think that Belgium has really need a government that is stable and strong enough, ” says Sophie Wilmès.

The Prime Minister then presented the famous diplomas. The opportunity for us to ask the children what is their favorite special power.

“Resurrecting people would be nice”, launches one. “I would love to have all the animals I would like to have in my house: dogs, cats”, explains another. “Go on TV,” said a third.

Go on TV, it’s done. As for Sophie Wilmès, after the visit to the school, she went back to work. At the head of a minority government which will be obliged from Tuesday to have all these decisions approved by the parliament.
