Sophie Calle and her real fiction of ‘Los Angeles’: the Almudí skylight houses 20 photographs of the French artist

MURCIA. A portrait of the American Society of Los Angeles. This is what it shows French artist Sophie Calle through the 20 black and white photographic portraits that make up the exhibition The Angels, that can be visited in the Lucernario Room of the Almudí Palace Murcia until March 25.

The artist has made her own life, her intimacy, her impressions and experiences the starting point of her creations. In this sense, her identity is atomized, it becomes multiple, by putting herself at stake and making herself her artistic subject: Sophie Calle exposes herself as if she were another person who had nothing to do with her. Fiction and reality, looking and being looked at, the public and the private, the desires and the impossibility of realizing them are some of the places from which the author of the work speaks.

Lyou curators of the exhibition are Carolina Parra and Nacho Ruiz, which were selected by the Cultural Reactives program for the launch of four artistic exhibitions in the Skylight of the Almudí Palace, a room characterized by its skylight. The Angels is the second exhibition of this cycle (the first was the exhibition Minimum Concept). Both curators were the exceptional guides during the opening of the exhibition of the Mayor, José Ballesta, and the Councilor for Culture, Jesús Pacheco.

Among the most relevant exhibitions of Sophie Calle (France, 1953) stand out which he has done at the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Museum of Sao Paulo in Brazil, the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Pont Museum of Contemporary Art in Tilburg, in the Netherlands or the Museum of Modern Art in Baía, in Brazil. In addition, he has represented France at the Venice Biennale and appears in all the great art collections in the world.

Black and white photography, video, installation or color photo are the techniques he masterfully employs to achieve an end of overwhelming intensity. His international debut was with The Sleepers, in 1979. Likewise, since 2005 he has exercised as a teacher in the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, in the University of California, San Diego and in the Mills College de Oakland, California.
