Sony Xperia 1V and Nikon Z8: Pushing the Boundaries of Contemporary Photography

The second week of May brought photographers two highly anticipated premieres. Nikon introduced the Z8 mirrorless camera and Sony introduced the top-of-the-line Xperia 1V camera. At the same time, both the camera and the mobile push the boundaries of contemporary photography and, according to expert journalists, indicate where photographic technology will develop.

Sony Xperia 1V mobile phones bring a completely new sensor design. By rearranging the light-sensitive photodiodes and accompanying transistors, the phone’s image sensor can “harvest” more light than ever before. When this technology is combined with computational magic like taking multiple images in quick succession and merging them into one higher-quality one, the result should be up to twice the ability to shoot in low-light conditions and much lower image noise.

What will that mean? It should deliver significantly better photo quality than is now common with top-of-the-line cameras. It is another step that brings mobile phones closer to the image quality we are used to from large cameras. And the difference is getting smaller. In addition, Sony is a big supplier of sensors to other phone manufacturers, so it is very likely that this technology will eventually appear in them as well.

Nikon is changing the established thinking of manufacturers, warns the reviewer

When it comes to the Nikon Z8 mirrorless, it also brings a significant change, according to reviewers. “The Nikon Z8 is exciting not only because it’s a very capable camera, but also because it represents a fundamental change in the approach we’re used to from manufacturers of photographic equipment,” says Jaron Schneider from PetaPixel, for example.

The Nikon Z8 is basically a scaled-down version of Nikon’s flagship, the Nikon Z9 mirrorless. As Schneider points out, it’s always worked so far that the lower model simply couldn’t have all the conveniences and functions that the one above it brought.

“The Z9 and Z8 are no different in their specialization and do exactly the same tasks. They both have the same top-of-the-line autofocus system and share the same high frame rate, making them ideal for sports and action. They also both share the same 45 megapixels, which means they can also be used for artistic photography and portraits,” says Schneider, noting that such an approach is very rare in the world of camera manufacturers. Usually, they don’t want the lower and therefore cheaper model to threaten the profits derived from the higher and more expensive one.

“Nikon realized that the Z9’s built-in battery grip and slightly better weather sealing were important to a minority of its customers, while the rest would prefer a smaller body without having to compromise on performance,” notes PetaPixel’s reviewer. At the same time, it is necessary to state that the Nikon Z9 is a very successful and appreciated model, so Nikon did not feel the need to change anything on it.
