Sonny Barger, the symbol of the Hells Angels, has died.

A life on the Harley-Davidson. He was 83 years old and strangely he died in his bed, from a tumor, after having combined all the colors for over half a century.

In the words of Vasco Rossi, Ralph “Sonny” Barger wanted, and has always had, a reckless, very reckless life made up of fights, fights and assorted stabs. But strangely, this legendary biker died a few days ago in his bed at 83, killed by a liver tumor. About forty years ago another tumor had taken away his vocal cords. So much so that from then on he could only speak in a metallic and croaking voice thanks to a device surgically placed in his throat that made him emit a strange and unsuitable voice for someone like him who was a real tough, a really tough guy.

the cigarette before the operation

A Harley-Davidson “license plate” Hells Angels – the group of hyperviolent Californian motorcyclists founded in 1948 – many fights, many women, several trials for a good catalog of crimes and even a lot of jail in the USA, for a total of about 13 years. He was in and out of jail. Just to get an idea and to better understand what kind Sonny Barger was, a few minutes before the throat surgery he was smoking a cigarette on the stretcher that was taking him to the operating room where, shortly thereafter, they would open his throat. Sonny, very long hair in the past and then nearly shaved in recent years, was the symbol of the Hells Angels, the “angels of hell”, the motorcycle club considered a criminal organization by the United States Department of Justice. of which he had founded the Oakland Chapter in 1957. An organization spread all over the world, including Italy.

A story of violence, that of the Hells, who knew how to be implacable against those cultures and those movements that we considered enemies, such as the hippies and the Black Panthers. They weren’t against the Vietnam War, even if they didn’t compete to be in the army. And when they found a rival group on their way, the brawl took place on time, often with blades and not infrequently with firearms. But the Hells Angels also managed to make clandestine deals with some complacent sheriff, capable of turning a blind eye to the violence and drug trafficking – especially amphetamines – for which the motorcycle club was responsible. Moreover, they knew how to sell well, so much so that they offered themselves as an order service at a free concert organized by the Rolling Stones in exchange for a few hundred dollars and beer. He certainly did not lack the means to be respected by everyone, but on the occasion of that concert, in Altamont in December 1969, a member of the Hells killed an eighteen year old under the stage on which Mick Jagger and his companions were performing. A feared and respected criminal group, still active today with about 250 chapter worldwide. And Sonny Barger was their charismatic leader. In one of the three autobiographical books on his life, Freedom: Credos from the Road of 2005, in the premise he wrote: “Live life Sonny Barger’s way? I don’t recommend it.” He left at the age of 83, after having really combined all colors.
