Solution in the making for Belgians who have been stuck in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica for two days

If all goes well, the 300 Belgians who have been stuck in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica for more than two days will be able to fly home tonight. The travelers were normally supposed to arrive in Brussels on Friday, but a defective TUI fly plane decided otherwise. A solution is now in the works, confirms TUI spokeswoman Sarah Saucin.

Spare parts for the defective aircraft were sent earlier this weekend, but they were unable to solve the problem. The search for a replacement device also failed. The affected tourists are entitled to compensation of 600 euros and were given a place to sleep in a hotel for the past two nights, TUI reports. They have already been taken to the airport several times, but that always turned out to be false hope.

The atmosphere dropped below zero. Many travelers complained about a lack of clear communication from TUI, and reported that the atmosphere on site became grim. “The police are also ready here, the situation had to get out of hand. People are really getting furious here,” a reader writes to us. “People have already had serious arguments here.”

Now a solution is in sight, confirms TUI spokeswoman Sarah Saucin. The plan is that the stranded travelers in the Dominican Republic can leave at 10:30 p.m., after which they should arrive in Zaventem on Monday morning. For travelers stranded in Jamaica, places were found on several other flights, directly to Zaventem or via Frankfurt or Manchester.

“We usually communicate with travelers via text message. We did that here too. We always try to have fast and efficient communication with passengers, but there have been a few miscommunications,” Saucin admits. “The passengers will receive compensation of 600 euros per person.”
