Education – Berlin – Müller admits mistakes in plans to open schools – Education

Berlin (dpa / bb) – Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller has admitted mistakes in the preparations for the rapid reopening of the schools, which was finally called off last Friday after much criticism. “First of all, you have to say that it didn’t go well, of course, and that we made a mistake in communication,” said the SPD politician on Monday on rbb-Inforadio. “Because the impression was given that all schools should open again from today. That was of course not the case at all.”

The aim has always been, analogous to joint federal-state resolutions and depending on the development of the number of infections, initially to enable the graduating classes “to come to schools in face-to-face classes because it is simply important for them to have an appropriate framework before they graduate from school, “said Müller. “And we just wanted to show how gradual schooling can look like, that first the final classes come, then the smaller years from 1 to 3, then from 3 to 6.” Especially since other federal states proceeded “not as strictly as we” and had graduating classes in schools in December or early January and wanted to open primary schools in mid-January.

“But there was great uncertainty,” said Müller. “A lot of parents and teachers were worried that too many would suddenly meet again at school. And then you had to correct it.”

After some back and forth, Education Senator Sandra Scheeres (SPD) announced last Friday that school-guided learning at home for students in grades 1 to 9 and for some higher grades will be extended until at least January 25th. Until then, there is no compulsory attendance. For the final grades 10, 12 and 13 at grammar schools and secondary schools, face-to-face offers in small groups should be possible from Monday.
